Saju guides

What is saju?

Saju is the Korean four-pillar chart: the year, month, day and hour of your birth, each written as two characters, eight in all.

Four pillars, eight characters

Each pillar has an upper character, one of ten heavenly stems, and a lower one, one of twelve earthly branches. Paired together they make a cycle of sixty, which names every year, month, day and two-hour block in turn.

The character that is you

Of the eight, the upper character of your birth day stands for you; it is called the day master. The reading looks at whether the other seven support you or push against you.

When the year turns

A saju year starts at Ipchun, the start of spring around February 4, not on January 1 or the lunar new year. Months follow the solar terms, not the moon. Born in January or early February? Your year pillar may be the year before.

How Ari Fortune calculates it

Ari Fortune draws the eight characters from a traditional saju calendar and corrects your birth time to true solar time for your birthplace. Ari then talks through your day and your questions in plain words.
