What are the five elements?
The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each of the eight characters in a saju chart belongs to one of them, and which are strong or missing shows a person's balance.
What each one means
Wood is growth and reach, fire is energy and expression, earth is holding and gathering, metal is sorting and deciding, and water is flow and attention.
The cycle that feeds
Wood feeds fire, fire leaves ash that becomes earth, earth holds metal, metal gathers water, and water grows wood.
The cycle that checks
Wood breaks earth, earth dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood. Checking is not only bad: it also trims an element that has grown too strong.
